The Hunger Games Unit Plan

Hey guys!
As Spencer and I create our unit plan for The Hunger Games, I was just wondering how many of you have actually read The Hunger Games? I think it would be super cool to include sort of a real life Hunger Games in the classroom. Of course, I'm not going to have my students kill each other off, like they do in The Hunger Games haha, but I do want to have some sort of on going game throughout the unit. There are 12 districts in the book, and 2 people from each district get selected for the Hunger Games. I have 24 students in each of my classes, so I thought it would be really cool for 2 students to represent a district. For those of you that have read the book: any ideas on how to create this? I really want to have a focus on the government's role in the book and social justice...thoughts?

  1. Ah that sounds so awesome! I have read them and absolutely loved them! So let me see if I understand what you're looking to do ... you want a way to represent the games ... minus the killing or with a pseudo killing thing? I have an idea if it's the pseudo one ... let me know. So excited for you and to see how it turns out!! =)

  2. Yup! that's exactly what I want, Jess! Thanks so much! I'm super excited too! Especially since I get to teach it to 8th graders next semester :)

  3. Well, my brother had this game at his college this year where they each were given a spoon and there were rules as to when and where they could "kill" each other. So if they came up to another member of their group during a legal time and put the spoon to them then the person was dead. There were all sorts of parameters though too like it couldn't be while in class, etc. Also, if they were holding hands they couldn't be killed or kill (which given the brutality of the hunger games, you don't necessarily need anything like that). That's just the idea I thought of when I read your post. I hope it made sense ... haha
